Each month we’ll be taking a closer look at the amazing makers, creators and inventors behind the wonderful and inspiring brands featured on Modern Little People, getting to know the “real” people and what was their inspiration and how it all began
Tell us about BORN Copenhagen and how you came up with the idea?
It all started when I was pregnant with our daughter, Laura. She was born in November 2015 and while I was pregnant, I was searching for a babynest with high quality and with no visible strings, but this proved to be a difficult task, and I soon realised that I was better off making one myself, because then I could make it exactly as I wanted it to be. Therefore, I designed our babynest, made it myself and soon I got the idea of starting BORN Copenhagen.
Who is your inspiration?
Well, this is probably a huge cliché, but my daughter really inspires me! I love to see how this tiny little human everyday makes me want to do good things that not only benefit myself, but more importantly others. I think when you have children your entire perspective on the world changes and she is a big influence on how I see the world. When it comes to my company, I want to try to keep focus and only design products that I can honestly say were made with all my heart. It takes me such a long time to make them perfect, and this is also why we do not have a wide range of products; because I spend so much time to consider every little detail, and because I know that as a parent, there are many requirements to the products we use for our children, so I try to make them the best they can be.
What first steps did you take before starting BORN Copenhagen?
I looked into the market to see if anyone had ever made anything like our babynest, and when I found out that there was nothing like this, I started to look into all the details that you need to consider when creating your own company.
How long was it before you acted on your idea, to then getting your first product manufactured?
I think our first production took us 7 months from first drawings to when we received our first delivery from our supplier. It takes so much more time than you would think, and it still does.
What has been the highlight so far?
Never in a million years would I ever think that we would grow this fast. Within a period of 6 months, we expanded to 11 different countries. It is so overwhelming and I feel so proud to see how my “baby” is growing so fast. I admit that it is hard work, sometimes both day and night, but I love my job – for the first time I actually look forward to going back to the office on Mondays, and I love the fact that I get to see so many babies and parents being so satisfied with their BORN Copenhagen products! 🙂
What did you find most challenging?
To find the right balance of work. When you are an entrepreneur, a mum, a wife, and a friend at the same time, it can be quite a challenge to distribute your time. So sometimes, I just turn off all electronics to make sure that when I am with my family I am 100% present and not checking my emails all the time. I am sure anyone who has their own business will recognize this feeling.
Which is your favourite product to date?
Without a doubt our babynests!
What do you wish you could tell your younger self?
To just feel more confident and know that as long as you follow your heart and work hard on the things you want, good results will come.
What’s your Modern Little Person’s bedroom style?
My daughter’s room is very calm and I try to use mainly subtle colours to make sure that she can relax and become calm at night after a day of adventures filled with lots of toys and playtime outside. Of course she also has a lot of very colourful toys, but I try to collect them each night in her beautiful toy boxes so that it looks very calm. At the moment the colours we use in her room are soft grey, dusty lavender and white to keep it nice and clean.
What can’t you live without?
If you mean materialistic things, well, beautiful dresses! I love dresses and wear one almost every day. I have a full closet filled with dresses and I love how a beautiful dress makes me feel – so feminine!
Salty liquorice – probably a very Danish thing, but this is my absolute favourite!
What advice would you give to others thinking about starting a business?
Just follow your heart and jump into it. You will make many mistakes, get very frustrated and sometimes want to just give up – but don’t! Just remember what your goal is and keep focused. Ask for help – running a business alone is hard. Luckily, I have had my husband to help me from the very beginning, and I would definitely advise anyone to have a partner – one to help you get through tough times and to drink champagne when you celebrate important milestones 🙂
